Our Kauai Guide: Where We Stay, What We Eat & More
Every time we visit Kauai, we split our stay on the south shore, specifically the Poipu area. We love this side of the island because the weather is typically warmer (the north shore is known for more rain), and it’s incredibly family friendly with so much to do close by.
Where we stay
We split our time between:
Sheraton Kauai Resort
Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa
The Grand Hyatt is definitely a splurge but truly worth it. The pools, the grounds, the beach access… it feels like a full luxury experience.
And even if you don’t stay there, I highly recommend going for breakfast.
They’re known for their buffet, but we ordered off the menu and I’m not exaggerating when I say it was the best banana bread I’ve ever had in my life. Everything was incredible. It’s one of those “core memory” breakfasts.
Even just booking a breakfast reservation lets you enjoy the property and soak in the experience without committing to the full stay.
That said if you’re traveling with kids, the Sheraton beach is much more manageable. We’ve found it easier and calmer for the girls.
Both resorts are walkable or a short drive to Poipu Village and Old Koloa Town, which makes everything super convenient.
☕️ Favorite Breakfast + Casual Eats
If you’re in Old Koloa Town, you have to stop at Java Kai.
Their macadamia nut latte is a dream (I think about it all year), and the banana bread is so good. I loved the avocado toast, but honestly, everything on the breakfast menu hits.
While you’re there, check the hours for the local Musibi Truck and grab a poke bowl ‘the local’ for lunch. I had one several times during our stay. Fresh, easy, and perfect between beach days.
And then… you must stop at JoJo’s Shave Ice.
The owners are the sweetest, and the shave ice is unreal. Whatever flavor you order, get the coconut cream topping with vanilla ice cream on the bottom. Non-negotiable.
But my personal favorite was ordering a side of coconut ice cream with coconut cream topping and macadamia nuts.
A Must-Do Sunset Dinner
For a more dressed-up dinner, book a reservation at The Beach House Restaurant.
Schedule it during sunset hour, the view is absolutely breathtaking.
They’re known for their Monkeypod Mai Tais, and their macadamia nut crusted fish (which changes weekly). We had the swordfish, and it was incredible. The food and service were truly 10/10.
It’s definitely more expensive, but such a worth-it splurge dinner. We’ll make it a tradition every time we visit.
Turtles + Whale Watching
One of the most magical parts of the trip was visiting Poipu Beach Park.
This is where we saw sea turtles (honu) resting on the beach at sunset and it was unreal. You can almost guarantee you’ll see turtles when you visit.
If you’re visiting in February, it’s also peak humpback whale season. You can often spot whales right from the shoreline on the south side, no boat tour required.
🌺 Our Favorite Luau
For a luau experience, we love Smith Family Garden Luau.
It’s hosted in botanical gardens, which makes the entire evening feel extra special. You’re served a full dinner while the performance walks you through the traditions and stories of the native cultures of the Hawaiian Islands.
It’s consistently rated one of the best luaus across the islands and after going.
